Scientists Discover a "Super Earth", Kepler-22b

Rate this Entry
Scientists discover a planet which has the most Earth-like condition ever.

The planet, called Kepler-22b is known to have a temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius) and is approximately 600 light years away from our planet which is located towards the constellations of Lyra and Cygnus. The planet is believed to have a radius of 2.4 times of Earth's radius. Kepler-22b's distance to the sun is believed to be 15% less than the distance from the Earth to the Sun, therefore orbits around it's sun every 290 days. As the Kepler-22b's sun is a G5 star, whilst our sun is a G2. As such, it has less luminosity than our sun.

So with the continous discovery of these stars, will the mankind eventually discover the signs of extraterrestrial lifeforms?

Yeah, I read a French report earlier.
However, having a potentially habitable planet doesn't mean it's actually inhabited.
Still, I believe we're not alone in the Universe even though there is no evidence for that.

True, but if we discovered we are not alone in universe. What will we do?

So exciting!! It almost makes me forget how sad I am that we were all born too late to explore the Earth, but too early to explore the galaxy :P.

wasnt the rule say that if earth wasnt in it's position even just 1mm, the planet won't support life like it supposed to be?

    600 light years away
So we were not meant to bump into one another in the first place ._.

    It might be heaven :p

hehe 600 light years ? Recently there was a case where a neutron travel faster than light, so who knows... :))

@|Ox|: actually no, as a matter of fact the distance between the Earth and the Sun is not a constant.

    It's actually a neutrino, not a neutron.
And it's slightly faster than light.

Yeah, my bad XD and you probably know why I got it wrong :))

600 light years? It's not a long distance you know.

I've read lots of news about something happen 1-2 million light years away from us.

Well, the orbit of the Earth isn't even circular, it's elliptical, and the difference between the position of the Earth relative to the Sun is up to 5 million km. So 1 mm wouldn't do anything at all.

how many kilometers is 600 lightyears? ^_^

Do i even want to know that?

actually, its a neutrino that was hypothesized to travel faster than light

I'm not the most knowledgeable about this topic, but it wasn't a hypothesis, it was experimental data, though not conclusive enough to take down the theory of relativity. And in any case, it wasn't much faster than the speed of light, and even if it's true, it'll be years until we know how to replicate such speed, let alone apply it to spacecrafts.

Nevermind the fact that a neutrino is how small again?
